The Adventure is over.

In a way, I completed my task. But, (there's always a "but"), not officially. The task was to go 1000+ miles in 24 hours. Start at 10:00 AM Saturday, follow a route in 5 segments, and get back to the starting point at 10:00 AM Sunday. Short story: Arrived Sunday at 10:06 AM [img]graemlins/clock.gif[/img] with 1068 miles. You have to be at the finish line by 10. I knew at the Yosemite west entrance that it probably wasn't going to happen, but hey...I had just watched the sunrise on the east side of Yosemite, then rode down from Tioga pass and watched the sun start to light up Yosemite Valley. Could have ignored the speed limit signs as the park rangers were probably not to worried about vehicle movement through the park ( I saw the first ranger in a truck on my way out of the park. Took about an hour and a half to get through the park, getting gas once. Lost six minutes? Maybe. Sunrise at Yosemite? Priceless...

I got a thousand miles under me in less than 24 hours. I can live with that. Someone before the rally suggested that a heated jacket would be a good idea. $200??? Uh...ok. Maybe make it a credit-card rental. Heck, it was 90 degrees in Nevada at 11:00 PM on U.S. 95 heading for Tonopah. After Tonopah it was Lone Pine on U.S. 395. From there, north to Yosemite and then west. Stopped on the way to the park at a bonus check point...thermometer registered 35 degrees. Yeah, I'd put the special jacket on, and had it cranked up full (too cheap to by the $80 thermostat...just went for the $14.95 on-off switch). Where there had been times trying out the jacket that I had to turn it off...this thing stayed on until I was out of the park. Actually kicked out the power-cord once when I was standing up on the pegs to stretch my legs. 30 seconds and I knew something was missing...heat! Backup plan: turn on heated seat up to full, look for a turnout. Always have a backup plan...re-connected things and life was good.

Neat thing...at the first checkpoint, they handed us a wildflower [img]graemlins/rose.gif[/img] , and told us not to crush it or deform it in any way. If it was wilted, that was ok. (???) Second check point was at the house of Gary's daughter in South Lake Tahoe, Gary being the killed motorcyclist and the guy the ride was in honor of. Figured the flower was for the second check point. Got to the second checkpoint, sat and rested in the back yard that butts up against the lake (2nd best view of the trip, too!), but no request for the flower. Turns out that on the last leg, we got bunches of points for taking the flower to the memorial on the road where Gary was killed, and leave the flower there. As fortune would have it, there was construction going on (Sunday morning!!!) and there was no way for people to stop at the memorial. Nice touch, though. I'll have to stop by there and thank Gary for a great ride.

I finished the ride at 10:06 AM [img]graemlins/snail.gif[/img] . Lost some points for coming in late, but in a field of 29, I came in 22nd. I'm not complaining (although many parts of my body are). It certainly was a different weekend. And, I'll probably take a ride out to Ely, NV and back in less than 24 hours so I can have an official certificate. But this was the ride I really did it. 1000 miles in 24 hours...and a sunrise I doubt I'll ever see beaten. [img]graemlins/sun.gif[/img]

I'll get an SS1000. As the rules for an IBA run are slightly different than if you do the 1000 miles in an event, my 1000 miles two weeks ago don't officially coung. With the event, you follow the rules set up for the event, in this case all I needed was to have someone clock me in at the finish before 10:00 AM. With an IBA-only run, you need witness forms signed at the beginning and the end, with verification, such as fuel receipts, to indicate the path you took. While it may be obvious to some, the receipt has a date and time on it from the self-serve pumps. And I found out that while the station may be closed, the credit card slot on the pump works 24/7.

Just wanted to say good luck with the move, hope all your dreams come true. The University really lost a great teacher by allowing you to get away (I say this based upon how well you've explained complicated things for me that I didn't comprehend prior to your explanations)
